Yakovlev Yak·38

As the Soviet Union began to build a 'blue water' navy they had to start from scratch to operate aircraft carriers and the aircraft that flew from them.
The Yakovlev Yak·38 (NATO code-name Forger) was the first practical VTOL aircraft to fly off the carrier Kiev. The aircraft had a main engine with two extra lift engines. Silen hovering at Zhukovsky, in August 1995, is 24(Yellow) a Yak-38U two-seat trainer.

The extra nose area makes this perhaps one of the most ugly aeroplanes flying today.
